After 10 days of soaking up the music and culture of Australia, I’ve made lots of new friends and been completely inspired by all the amazing music. I’m back in Los Angeles now, but not nearly done reporting and posting footage from the trip.

Melbourne-based DJ/Producer JULES INKSWEL booked me to mix with him at The Croft Institute last Saturday night. I could tell by their website that it would be an adventure to find it, so I filmed the search.

‘Twas a great night, indeed - people were packed in there (on every floor), with Inkswel getting them sweaty to some Disco, Boogie and whatnot. I matched his style and then went to some Latin, Brazilian, Funk, Disco… then from 2-3am we went back and forth every other record. #classic

Some of the tracks he played that I liked the most were his own productions, and those of his friends. This backing track is “Marmalade Jam” by FlowerPot (Cuckoo Music).

Had a great time (and amazing brunch) with LANCE FERGUSON (aka LANU) and his family - rapped about his projects THE BAMBOOS, COOKIN’ ON 3 BURNERS, LANU and his musical life on Tru Thoughts records. Lance is an outrageous guitarist, songwriter, producer and all-around mastermind. Definitely dig his arsenal of sounds.

On top of all those projects, his new outfit called THE FIREMEN will be playing their classic Blue Note and Prestige records-style jazz funk at Northside Records, in celebration of Record Store Day, Saturday 16th April at 2pm.

…was digging for records at Northside in Melbourne, and these cats were outside having lunch. Chris (owner of Northside) suggested I have a chat with them, and then I realized that it was Lotek, who produced the music for Roots Manuva. Now, these are HUGE records for me, so I was quite excited to meet him. Next to him was Aussie beatboxer and emcee Morganics, fresh as well. When Tourism Australia first contacted me to start planning the trip, they were used to dealing with reporters in the traditional sense, people who were there to report on a specific event or story. It didn’t take long for them to get on board, and break the mold of past experiences to allow for this musical discovery mission I would be on.

This clip is a prime example of what must happen when dealing in the mystical world of artists. Australia was to be my muse and I, like an artist, had to allow myself to be guided by the moments that happen in between ”plans”.

I was with “Mista” Jake Savona, recording emcee Mantra in a loft-style overdub studio in Brunswick. We were steppin out to go eat and this girl was in the stairwell working on a tune. Jake and I looked at each other at the bottom of the stairs and both thought the same thing. We walked back up and asked if she wouldn’t mind playing for us what she was working on. Brothers and sisters, meet Kiki Wilmot.

Good question, MF.
There’s a fine line between a wanna-be artist and a tributary one. At the risk of sounding like a big-headed american, I expected the former and was excited by the latter! I assumed I would find some artists that emulate american music (or any “foreign” music), without the strong foundation and understanding that would be necessary to do it justice.

Instead I found bands, deejays and producers that draw influence from other regions of the world, just like anyone else, but cull their strongest inspirations from their own souls - which is always the makings of the best music, in my opinion.
